Why Real Madrid Have 'Complete Confidence' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for the Spanish giants, including five starts.

Whenever a 18-year-old creates Real Madrid history in a pivotal Champions League tie against City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.

In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years old, the midfielder was the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent Through The Academy

This talent is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and drive he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Is His Character'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the senior squad and awarded him minutes in the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his career as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that led to the clash with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I began playing football, every day you go to train and every day you play a match," stated the player following his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the world and in the best competition."

Handed a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have defied his youth and experience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, effort and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.

"His standout trait is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I understand people are surprised to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to perform what he usually does.

"He will continue to get chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before entering the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the choice to play for both nations at senior international level.

Under international regulations, footballers may represent different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they appear in a official full international.

He has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the under-19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with interest.

In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision soon."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for Spain, Brahim decided to represent Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He played over an hour in the two-one win at City, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the team chase future success.

Following his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I have to earn my minutes on the pitch," he said after the win at Etihad Stadium.
