The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Attack
The experienced striker's signing should represent a major boost to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing the German international comes at a time when United seem to be building momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further business:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
