The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami Dade County Mayor.
While perhaps not at the same level as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official conducted a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people yelling “six seven” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently made “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to kick off the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and based in heritage that bring people together. Every time, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
