The beloved police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh season, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part series created by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The previous season wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

However, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers track the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor called appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the new season will premiere.

The finale of series six brought the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the corporation announced on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
