The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a girl harboring several human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct souls, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while other scenes show the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger something primal within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with nurses who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers where their necks are. Flowers are an ever-present element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one standing might be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
