Democrats Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty

Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after the ex-president alleged a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and declared they should be arrested and punished "through capital punishment" following their posting of a contentious video.

The Content That Triggered the Dispute

The recorded message, shared on Tuesday, includes six Democratic congress members who previously worked in defense or intelligence roles.

"As we did, you all took an oath to defend and support this founding document," the lawmakers affirmed in the brief video. "At present, the threats to our governing document are not only from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our regulations are explicit, you can reject illegal orders, you can decline illegal orders, you must reject unlawful commands. No one has to execute orders that contravene the statutes or our national charter."

Donald Trump's Angry Reaction

The clip appeared to provoke a angry reaction from the ex-president.

On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another publication, he stated: "This constitutes really bad, and Harmful to our United States. Their comments cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Leaders Respond

Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Democratic leadership published a unified announcement denouncing the comments.

"Violent politics has no position in this nation," they wrote. "Representatives who participated in the video all acted our nation with tremendous patriotism and honor. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous calls for execution against elected officials, and urge Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."

The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in communication with law enforcement "to make certain the protection of these members and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must without delay take down these radical online messages and recant his dangerous discourse before he causes harm," the statement added.

Representatives' Defiant Answer

The representatives who were featured in the video also issued a response.

"We identify as veterans and national security professionals who value this United States and took an oath to defend and defend the constitution of the United States," they said. "That oath continues forever, and we plan to keep it. No warning, coercion, or incitement will deter us from that important obligation."

"The significant point is that the ex-president considers it punishable by execution for us to repeat the statutes," they stated. "Our service members should understand that we have their protection as they carry out their vow to the constitution and obligation to follow only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."

They added: "Every American must come together and denounce the ex-president's calls for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a moment for moral clarity."

Additional Partisan Responses

The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's statements and posted on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the capital punishment of government members."

He stated: "This is an clear THREAT. All senators, all representatives, every American – regardless of party – should censure this without delay and unconditionally."

The Conservative official justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This represents very risky, you have leading members of the government instructing troops to defy commands, I think that is without precedent in American history."

The Republican leader also allegedly told the press that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the offense of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to examine the terminology and decide all that."

Executive Branch Statement

During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when questioned by a reporter, "Is the president want to execute elected officials?", the executive branch representative replied: "No."

"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the representative declared. "We see active officials of the federal government who conspired to arrange a video message to members of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers encouraging them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."

She added: "The integrity of our defense system relies on the command structure, and if that system is broken, it can lead to people getting killed, it can result in chaos, and precisely what these elected officials ... are essentially supporting."
