Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Meloni to Auction Off International Gifts for Good Cause

Getting rid of unwanted offerings could be considered slightly impolite – unless it's done in the proper manner.

A Philanthropic Clear-Out

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, will offload around 270 gifts given to her by world leaders on official trips. This unusual assortment could include gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

The presents, together, are worth an estimated €800,000. They will be sold in a public auction by a Italian auction firm. A date has not been finalized, although the intention is to hold the auction before Christmas, with the proceeds benefiting a selection of charitable causes.

Storage Room Treasures

The items are currently locked away in a secure area on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. Reports indicate that Meloni is also intending to auction off gifts given to her predecessors that have been stored away for years.

The detailed catalog is yet to be officially released, but some insight emerged earlier this year when a detailed register of all declared gifts was reviewed by officials. The question centered on whether a statutory cap on gift value was being followed. According to regulation, a prime minister must declare presents exceeding €300.

An International Assortment of Gifts

The collection includes:

  • A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
  • A set of adornments from the president of Slovakia.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the former US president.
  • A digital device from the Ukrainian president.
  • Artworks from Moldova.
  • Additional objects including cosmetics, a board, and numerous carpets from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the most unusual gifts were the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.

Political Backdrop

Meloni has been credited, mostly from her own political sphere, with winning over global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a significant player on the international platform once again.

The forthcoming sale symbolizes a distinct method to handle the diplomatic artifacts that are collected during a time in office.
